Complete Landscape Bed Maintenance Services for Springfield, VA Homeowners

Hand Weeding

Springfield's clay-heavy soil and humid summers create ideal conditions for weeds to take root and spread fast. Our hand weeding service keeps your beds clean without harsh chemicals, protecting your plants and soil health. With regular weed control visits, we stay ahead of growth before it becomes a problem. Each visit includes thorough weed removal from all bed areas and inspection for new growth.

Shrub Pruning for Structure and Health

Proper shrub pruning promotes healthy growth, maintains shape and size, and removes damaged branches that can invite disease. Our shrub trimming service also improves airflow through dense plantings, which helps prevent fungal issues common in Northern Virginia's humid climate.

Deadheading for Continuous Blooming

Deadheading is key to keeping your Springfield, VA flower beds blooming all season long. By removing spent flowers, we encourage repeat flowering, improve plant appearance, prevent unnecessary seed production, and direct energy back into healthy growth.

Perennial Cutbacks and Seasonal Plant Care

Regular perennial cutbacks keep your beds looking neat and help plants come back stronger each year. Our seasonal plant care includes foliage cleanup, plant health checks, and timely cutbacks to keep your landscape looking its best.

Professional Mulching

Fresh mulch installation does more than look good-it suppresses weed growth, retains soil moisture, and regulates soil temperature throughout the year. A proper mulch layer also protects roots from freeze-thaw cycles that are common in Springfield winters.

Why Springfield, VA Homeowners Choose Independence Landscape

Independence Landscape has served Northern Virginia since 2006, and Springfield's established older neighborhoods represent some of the most complex and interesting landscape maintenance work we do in Fairfax County. Founders Chad Evans and Curt Greene built their company with an appreciation for mature landscapes - not just newly installed ones - and Springfield's older properties reflect decades of plant development that requires genuine horticultural knowledge to steward well. Our full-time year-round crews know how to work with mature shrubs and perennial beds rather than simply managing them by rote, and your dedicated Account Manager builds a long-term plan that honors the character of what you already have.

Routine Landscape Bed Maintenance Schedule

Springfield's mature established beds respond best to maintenance that works with their natural rhythms rather than imposing a generic schedule on them. Our crews visit on a consistent monthly basis during the growing season, but the scope of each visit is informed by what the specific plantings in your beds actually need - cutting back a mature forsythia that's finishing bloom, managing the creeping phlox that's spilled beyond its bounds, or addressing the deep-rooted perennial weeds that are characteristic of older established beds in this part of Fairfax County. Experience makes the difference between maintenance that preserves mature landscape value and maintenance that slowly degrades it.

My wife and I were so surprised when we came home to the terrific job the team did on our landscape, bed clean-up, and mulching! We can’t say enough about the quality of the job and how much better our yard looks already. We wanted to pass along our gratitude to the entire team and also greatly appreciate all of Sam’s help and level of communication along the way. Thank you again for all your hard work. Independence has been performing monthly upkeep on my yard for several years. As a result, my corner lot is the envy of our neighborhood. I have also entrusted them with bigger projects such as burying drain pipes in my yard, landscaping a big area in my front yard, and also spring cleaning, maintenance, and mulching. I am always amazed by the excellent service they provide. From the management team with whom I interface for estimates to the skilled workers who complete the jobs, everything is top-notch.

My first experience with Independence Landscape occurred during last month’s snowstorm. They are responsible for snow removal in my neighborhood under a contract with VDOT. While observing from my window, I noticed one of their snow plows was struggling up a hill, while another truck attempted to tow it. Once they managed to free the stuck plow, it unfortunately veered into both my yard and my neighbor's, as well as knocking down my mailbox in the process.
Witnessing this, I went outside and met Chris, who was genuinely apologetic and assured me they would fix the situation. Once the snow melted, Allen came by to install a new mailbox and it looks great! Chris has also kept me informed, letting me know that once the weather improves, they will repair the damage to the grass in my yard and some of my neighbor’s caused by the plow.
It’s refreshing to work with a company that stands by its promises and takes accountability for unexpected incidents. I appreciate collaborating with a locally owned business that values strong ethics, and I look forward to contacting them for any future landscaping needs. The commitment of employees like Chris and Allen truly makes a difference. They exceeded my expectations in addressing the damage, and I’m very thankful for their efforts. Thank you, Chris and Allen—your company is fortunate to have such dedicated team members!

Independence Landscape is a top notch company! Our church wanted to landscape the front to create an inviting and welcoming walkway up to the sanctuary entrance. The landscape architects listened carefully to our vision which they then interpreted into a place of beauty and function, incorporating a large number of native plants in to the design as we requested. Every person who worked on our property was thoughtful, courteous and diligent. They often went above and beyond to make improvements. Specific requests we made were met with a smile. No shortcuts were taken. Our expectations were exceeded when the work was complete and the congregation responded with praises. We are so proud of our new entrance and are enjoying the results while also supporting the environment. We will be using Independence again for future landscape work.

We've been using Independence Landscape for our lawn treatments for two years now. We also had them do spring cleanup the first year as well. They assign a service quality manager to their accounts. Ours is Allen Safrit. We met Allen initially for the estimate and have found him to be knowledgeable, professional, responsive and proactive.

Independence is a bit higher in price compared to the company we had been using, but, like the saying goes... you get what you pay for. Their treatment plan works great. I had been doing the fertilizing, spraying, etc. for many years and our lawn looked great. But a few years back I thought I would save some time and as the cost was going to be similar we went with another company that initially worked out well. And then we came upon Independence. They were in our neighborhood and we thought we would give them a try. We are so glad we did. Their approach and treatment plan works great. So great that some of our neighbors have asked us who we use.

We can't say enough about Allen. He really makes the difference. It's nice to be able to speak with someone who knows us and our property. In fact, we are considering going with their tree and shrub program next season.

First rate experience and first rate manager. Thanks Independence and Allen for taking care of us so well.

I can’t say enough good things about the customer service and the results I get from Independence landscape. They offer a number of different lawn care regimens specific to the client needs. Over the years, I’ve tried two other lawn services and knowing that it takes years to build a good lawn, I’ve been patient and then disappointed by other companies. Here are some things that make me a customer for life: I get a telephone call from a friendly employee one or two days ahead of the next planned Treatment - Independence checks the weather and does treatments one or two days before rain is expected to improve the efficacy. When I get a reminder call, if I have any specific concerns, they make note of them and I promptly receive a call back from Brandon my Arlington neighborhood representative. Brandon takes time to understand my questions or requests and follows up with action within the week; this year, they worked with me to correct a problem I was having with wire grass/string grass in my front lawn. Its been persistent for 30 years and other companies had either told me it was crabgrass or there was nothing that could be done about it. Independence applied three treatments this spring that killed the string grass this summer and now allow me to have a beautiful lawn here this fall and I’m sure an even nicer one in the spring. Brandon has gone out of his way over the years and his crews are thorough reaching every corner of my yard. The grass seed that they use is first rate. i’m no expert, but apparently it is pre-treated with fertilizer and I observed it germinating in about half the time my neighbors store-bought seed took. I read that grass takes about 10 days to germinate. If I set my sprinkler timer to water four minutes every six hours, I get germination with their seed in about five days. Even the new grass is lush and beautiful. They also leave behind a small sign in the yard with instructions for aftercare for each treatment and explaining what was done that day. The plan I'm on has them doing something to my lawn about 10 times a year. There’s just no way that I could keep up with the consistency I get from using an outside company and their quality is for better than I could ever get my own or from the services I’ve tried in past years. They just don’t even come close. I look forward to many future years of service from Independence .

Frequently Asked Questions

For most Springfield properties with mature established plantings, monthly maintenance from April through October is the right foundation, with specific timing adjustments for the spring and fall transitions. Spring cleanup in late March or early April - after the last expected frost but before the main growth surge - is critical for cutting back winter-damaged perennial material and assessing shrub condition after dormancy. Summer months require consistent weed management, particularly for deep-rooted perennial weeds that are common in older Springfield beds with decades of accumulated organic matter. A fall cleanup in October or November addresses the leaf drop and beds-down work that prepares established plantings well for winter dormancy.

Each visit typically includes hand weeding, debris removal, and a general inspection of plant health. Depending on the season, we also handle deadheading, light pruning, and landscape bed cleanup. If we spot signs of stress or irrigation problems, we flag them right away so they can be addressed before they spread. With nearly 20 years of experience serving Northern Virginia, our crews know exactly what to look for during each visit.

Yes - and Springfield's older properties often benefit most from a bundled approach that treats the landscape as a whole rather than a collection of separate tasks. Many Springfield homeowners pair bed maintenance with a formal shrub pruning program - older properties commonly have large established hollies, forsythias, or azaleas that need structural pruning separate from routine maintenance trimming. Leaf management is another common bundle for properties with significant oak or maple canopy, where fall leaf volume requires its own service plan. Coordinating everything under one Account Manager provides the continuity and context that older, complex landscapes particularly benefit from.

Yes - and plant renovation is something that comes up regularly for Springfield's older properties. Shrubs and perennials that have been in the ground for forty or fifty years sometimes reach a point where renewal planting - replacing aged or failing specimens with better-suited alternatives - produces better results than continued maintenance of plants past their prime. We assess plant health and landscape composition as part of ongoing maintenance relationships and make honest recommendations about when renovation makes sense, what should be replaced and with what, and how to phase changes to avoid wholesale disruption of an established landscape. Sometimes the right call is a targeted renovation in one bed area; sometimes it's a comprehensive replanting of a section that simply isn't performing.

We work with new homeowners near you in Springfield, VA all the time, and overgrown beds are one of the most common issues we see. The first step is a landscape bed cleanup to remove weeds, dead plant material, and debris so we can see what you're working with. From there, we can recommend a maintenance plan that brings your beds back to life and keeps them looking great going forward. Our team handles everything from initial cleanup to ongoing care, so you don't have to figure it out alone.
